Adoption Process

Step One:  Visit our Shelter

Visit our shelter and meet and interact with the parrots currently available for adoption. Please note that Adoption Applications are taken for a minimum of 30 days once a parrot is made available for adoption. Once you have done so, if you believe one of the available parrots would be a good fit in your home, and if you have shown you are able to handle and interact with said parrot, proceed to Step Two.  Be aware that adoption fees apply to all adoptions, which fees are set at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Step Two:  Complete an Adoption Application

Complete and submit an Adoption Application for the parrot you would like to be considered to adopt, along with a application/member fee of $25.00 which will defray the cost of a home visit and also entitle you to a 15% discount on toys and food purchased through our avian warehouse store for a period of one year.  Subsequent Adoption Applications do not require a separate application/member fee.

Step Three:  Application Evaluation

Your Adoption Application will be evaluated only if you have met and interacted with the parrot applied for. References may be contacted. If the information gathered, taken as a whole, makes it appear your home would potentially be satisfactory for placement of the parrot in question, we will move forward.

Step Four:  Schedule a Home Visit

You will be contacted for the scheduling of a home visit at a time mutually convenient for you and the home visit volunteer.  During that visit, your home will evaluated for space, cage, health, safety, etc., in order to determine whether it would be a good fit for the parrot in question, and the volunteer will also visit with you concerning parrot care, answer any questions you may have, and will also ask to be shown any cage you already have.

Step Five:  Adoption

You will be notified if you were chosen to adopt and, if so, may come in and complete an Adoption Contract, pick out a cage (if you do not already have one), as well as cage accessories, food, toys, etc.  Upon adoption, you will also invited into our shelter’s members only Facebook group.

Important Considerations:

We do not ship parrots.

We do not adopt to (most) smokers.

Adoptions are not first-come, first-served, and we strive to find the right fit for each parrot and each family.

Refusal of a home visit will result in automatic denial of an adoption.

Completion of an Adoption Application and/or participating in a home visit does not guarantee adoption.  C.A.A.R.E. reserves the right to refuse any adoption.

If a volunteer cannot be found to conduct a home visit due to distance. and if another means of conducting a home visit cannot be implemented, denial of adoption may be necessary.

Adoption and cage fees are refundable for a period of up to 30 days as long as the parrot is returned in good health and the cage is returned along with the parrot and is clean.  Failure to return a clean cage will result in the deduction of a $25.00 cleaning fee from any refund given.

If, after 30 days, the parrot is unable to be kept for any reason at any time, be aware that per our Adoption Contract, the parrot may not be sold or given away under any circumstances and must be returned to our shelter.
