BACKGROUNDSeveral years ago, a club was formed in Fargo, North Dakota, called the Prairie Exotic Bird Club. Social in nature, the PEBC members would meet and each member would bring and discuss their own parrots, thereby expanding each member’s knowledge of parrots beyond their own. In 2001-2002, several members of PEBC broke away formed a similar but new social club, naming it the Red River Valley Pet Bird Club (RRVPBC). In time, the Prairie Exotic Bird Club ceased to exist, but the RRVPBC members continued not only to meet, show their parrots, and discuss parrots; the members also found themselves in the position of being approached to take in and foster displaced parrots and to find new homes for them. As the need for fostering and re-homing services for parrots grew, the RRVPBC members realized it was time to take a new direction and they not only changed their club’s name to the Center for Avian Adoption, Rescue, and Education (CAARE), they also incorporated as a North Dakota nonprofit corporation. In 2006, CAARE was granted federal tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. |
